George Washington  During his farewell address, George Washington expressed his distaste for political parties and warned about their negative impact on the democratic process. Washington stated, “They [political parties] serve to organize faction, to give it an artificial and extraordinary force; to put, in the place of the delegated will of the nation the will of a party, often a small but artful and enterprising minority of the community.” In this excerpt from over 200 years ago, Washington accurately predicted a fundamental flaw in our current government. It is becoming increasingly apparent that partisan politics has taken a significant precedent to actual representation in our representative democracy.

"Let each citizen remember at the moment he is offering his vote that he is not making a present or a compliment to please an individual - or at least that he ought not so to do; but that he is executing one of the most solemn trusts in human society for which he is accountable to God and his country." --
Samuel Adams, in the Boston Gazette, 1781
